Cats and Taps
Cats can be very fussy about the water they choose to drink. They like fresh water so it is important to change their water bowl daily or if possible provide them with a water fountain. They appear to like running water the best and some cats will even drink from a tap!
As running water is generally much healthier and less polluted than stagnant, still water, and also generally colder than water that has been sitting in a bowl, this might be one reason for their preference.
In general cats don’t need to drink a lot of water, especially if they eat canned food because it contains some water. However if your cat is on wet food only it will need significantly more water to stay hydrated. However, kidney problems are common in older cats and so perhaps drinking more water throughout their life may help to prevent or delay this problem.
