Do You Need to Groom Your Cat?

Whilst it is true that cats can take care of their own grooming, it is a good way to check for any signs of ill health and can strengthen the bond between you and your cat.

Grooming has a number of benefits for your pet-

  • It can help to stimulate the circulation
  • Muscle tone can be improved
  • It can help to reduce hairballs forming in the stomach due to loose hairs being ingested
  • It helps to smooth the fur which in turn will insulate the cat’s body more efficiently
  • It can help to stimulate the glands  at the base of the hairs which help to waterproof the coat
  • Finally grooming helps to spread the natural oils (sebum) across the coat. This oil protects the skin and waterproofs the coat.

When grooming your cat look out for external parasites e.g. fleas. These need to be treated quickly. Also check for any cuts or abrasions. If you are concerned about the welfare of your cat, then seek advice from a qualified vet.
